We collect personal information that you voluntarily provide to us when you register on the Services, express an interest in obtaining information about us or our products and Services, when you participate in activities on the Services, or otherwise when you contact us.
Personal Information Provided by You. The personal information that we collect depends on the context of your interactions with us and the Services, the choices you make, and the products and features you use. The personal information we collect may include the following:
Contact syncing is optional. Before any contacts are uploaded, Overlap explains what data will leave your device and asks for your consent. If you agree, Overlap uploads the names, phone numbers, email addresses, and birthdays from the contacts you allow to our servers. We use this data only to find people you may know on Overlap and to provide birthday reminders. We do not sell contact data or use it for advertising.
You can withdraw consent and delete the uploaded copies at any time in the app under Settings > Account settings > Contact sync > Disconnect & Delete Synced Contacts. This does not alter the contacts stored on your device.
If you grant foreground location permission, your current device coordinates are used on your device to center the map and show your position to you. Overlap does not upload or store those current device coordinates. Home cities and trip destinations that you choose are stored with your account and plans so the Services can show travel and overlap information.
Calendar and email connections are optional. When you connect one, Overlap processes data from the calendars or account scopes you authorize to find possible travel and create private suggestions. A suggestion is not shared with other users unless you review and post it.
We use PostHog to understand feature usage and app performance and to diagnose errors. After sign-in, analytics can be associated with your account and may include your user ID, name, username, selected home city, app and device characteristics, screens and features used, game events, error or crash details, and performance measurements. We do not use this information for cross-company tracking or targeted advertising, and we do not intentionally send contact lists, private message contents, or connected calendar or email contents in analytics events.
In production versions of our iOS and Android apps, we may also use privacy-masked session replay to understand navigation, taps, screen transitions, timing, and where a flow becomes difficult to complete. Text, text inputs, photos, avatars, and system picker views are masked on your device before replay data is uploaded. We disable console-log and network-telemetry capture for these recordings. Replays may be associated with your account or persistent device identifier so we can investigate a reported problem. On our website, we also use session replay with all visible text and form inputs masked, images and embedded media blocked, and console-log and network-payload capture disabled. These recordings help us diagnose signup failures and other website issues.
In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law.
When you enable contact syncing, we process the contact information you share to compare phone numbers and email addresses with registered Overlap accounts and to create birthday reminders. Contact syncing is not required to use the app.
When you connect a calendar or email account, we process the authorized data to detect possible travel and prepare private suggestions. We also process identified product analytics and diagnostics to understand usage, operate features, improve performance, and fix errors.
Vital Interests. We may process your information where we believe it is necessary to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of a third party.

We may process your information if you have given us specific permission (i.e., express consent) to use your personal information for a specific purpose, or in situations where your permission can be inferred (i.e., implied consent). You can withdraw your consent at any time.

We may use cookies, device storage, and similar technologies to maintain the security of the Services and your account, prevent crashes, fix bugs, save your preferences, deliver app updates, and measure product usage. We do not use these technologies to combine your activity with third-party data for targeted advertising or advertising measurement.

Synced contact data is retained while contact syncing remains connected and is deleted when you use Disconnect & Delete Synced Contacts or delete your account, subject to any limited retention required by law.

Account Information

Upon your request to terminate your account, we will deactivate or delete your account and information from our active databases. However, we may retain some information in our files to prevent fraud, troubleshoot problems, assist with any investigations, enforce our legal terms and/or comply with applicable legal requirements.

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems and mobile applications include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online.
